A recent study suggests that patients who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals buying such medications must be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Experts suggest the way of the injections accounts for the heightened weight return.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
People who have stopped the medication explain a sudden return of hunger.
"It felt as if something activating and you're instantly ravenous," said a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Use is higher among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural changes.
